Total War: MEDIEVAL II Kingdoms Expansion (Mobile)

Total War: MEDIEVAL II Kingdoms is the massive expansion to the Total War MEDIEVAL II game, adding four completely new campaigns, each of them highlighting their own unique setting (Americas, Britannia, Crusades, Teutonic) with different factions, units, battles, and even gameplay mechanics.


In standard Total War fashion, the game offers 2 distinct integrated gameplay “modes”, the strategy/campaign where you can manage your faction, including its armies and settlements; and the battle mode, where you engage in battle controlling massive armies.


Initially released for desktop, Feral Interactive ported this title to iOS and Android platforms. This port not only ensures that the classic engaging gameplay is preserved but also optimizes its performance and overall user experience for mobile devices while adding one or two new features along the way.


Some of my contributions to this project were:

  • Helped adapt the UI for mobile devices, including accounting for a wide range of mobile phones and tablets, as well as for different localization texts. Most of the time this required reworking the UI layout, following the Design department guidelines. Of particular note was the integration of interactable UI, such as text boxes that had to receive input from both virtual and physical keyboards.
  • Fix multiple bugs, including a few seen in the original retail release of the Total War: Medieval II base game and some caused by the integration of the Kingdoms expansion pack. This included using Xcode’s Frame Debugger to identify basic graphical issues.
  • Solve edge cases in the game’s brand-new launcher, which was designed using a C++ library to support HTML and CSS-like files. Most notably, this included creating a redundancy system for the correct price to be obtained from the AppStore in some special cases, requiring me to modify the related Objective-C code.

The Kingdoms expansion adds 4 massive campaigns/game settings to the Total War: Medieval 2 base game.
