Folklore of Cuzcatlan

Institution: Algonquin College

Course:   GAM1520-Rapid Prototyping

Date: Winter 2015

Platform: Flash

Programming Language: ActionScript 3

For this rapid prototyping assignment, I created a side-scroller shooter game on the myth of "El Cipitio", from my home country of El Salvador. In the game, you have to run to the end of the level as quick as possible, in the mid of a volcano eruption. This is further complicated by the presence of flying lava snakes that will attack the player, but that can be killed.

This Flash game was made using ActionScript 3 and the Flixel Game Library. Though this is a relatively simple project, I am particularly proud of it. I grew up playing a lot of Flash games, so managing to get a game into Newgrounds was a particular goal of mine.

Source Code

Some of the features implemented for this project were:

  • Basic controls for sprinting, jumping, and shooting (throwing rocks)
  • Dynamic parallax background of an erupting volcano. This combined with background and foreground particles systems, beside a screen shake, to further provide tension to the game.
  • Semi-randomly placed enemies, that can detect the player and move toward  him to attack him.
  • Elemental hazards like fire and lava that can kill player
  • Basic menu system showing an intro screen, and a game over screen
  • Custom level made using map tiles and created with the DAME Editor. This file is read from a CSV using a Flixel function.

This game was based on the folkore of my home country of El Salvador, particularly in the myth of "El Cipitio".
